True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum

Museum | King's Lynn | England | United Kingdom

The True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum in King's Lynn is a unique museum dedicated to the history of the fishing community in the north of King's Lynn. The museum is located in one of the few remaining buildings from that time and provides a deep insight into the lives of the fishermen and their families who once lived and worked here.

The museum shows how the tough and often dangerous life of the fishermen shaped a close-knit community that supported each other. The fishermen would often sail up to 100 miles to make their catch, while their wives at home cared for the children, waited, and repaired the nets. This close bond and solidarity of the northern community is reflected in the exhibits.

Exhibits include historical cottages furnished to original standards, illustrating the daily lives of fishing families in centuries past. Particularly noteworthy is the depiction of the smokehouse, where fish was smoked – a tradition deeply rooted in the history of King's Lynn.

The museum not only showcases the history of fishing, but also the social and cultural aspects of life in this tight-knit, self-sufficient community. Visitors learn about the craftsmen of the area such as boat builders, sailmakers, and ship chandlers, who were also part of this working world.

True's Yard offers a fascinating opportunity to experience the cultural heritage of the fishing community and learn more about the traditions and unity of this unique group of people. It is an important place to preserve the history of a part of King's Lynn that was closely linked to fishing.

I wasn't sure what to expect but was very pleasantly surprised. For me the highlights were the yard cottage and smokehouse but there is a lot more to see in this well laid out museum which is a hidden treasure.
